If you ask a group of people who have never been hypnotized if they think they are immune to it, how many will say yes? Probably about 70% of them. Newcomers often see hypnosis as a stage trick, or a pseudoscience. Everyone thinks they are too “rational” to fall under the spell of hypnosis. Of course, what they don’t realize is that their rationality can be turned against them.
No one is immune to influence, so no one is immune to hypnosis
No one is immune to hypnosis because hypnosis isn’t magic. Hypnosis is influence and anyone and everyone can be influenced. Hypnosis takes a naturally occurring state (a state of trance) and takes advantage of it. It’s similar to someone taking advantage of you when you’re tired, intoxicated or distracted. You’re in a state when you’re not completely sober-minded, and a hypnotist simply gives you some suggestions. In this state… you are more easily influenced. These suggestions might nudge you to to think a little bit differently, or to do something you normally wouldn’t do. Think of it like this, someone gives you an intoxicating drink and afterwards nudges you to do something you would normally be too afraid to do. If a friend has ever convinced you to try something new or to do something you were afraid of, you’ve been influenced. You are not immune to the power of influence, no one is.
Some people are more susceptible to hypnosis
Researchers at Stanford and Harvard have both developed scales to measure how susceptible one is to hypnosis. You can get a brief overview of both scales on this wikipedia article. What makes someone more likely to fall into a state of hypnosis is a general trend to be able to think deeply, visualize and get lost in thought. Qualities that are seen in people who are highly susceptible to hypnosis are:
- You have a high IQ or higher than average test scores (source)
- Daydreaming or fantasizing often (source)
- Getting deeply absorbed in thoughts or in fiction (source)
- Being able to visualize imagery vividly (source)
- Having childhood memories of an earlier age than average (source)
- Being able to remember memories very vividly (source)
- Having a history of trauma or having PTSD (source)
People who have an ability to focus deeply, get absorbed in their thoughts and imagination are usually more easily hypnotized. However, anyone can be hypnotize by the right person. All it takes is someone who’s voice and presence have a way of influencing you. If you’re curious to see how hypnosis affects you, go watch my Good Boy Training on youtube and see how the hypnosis affects your mind for the rest of the day. Notice if your thoughts, behaviors and mood are a little bit different after taking in the hypnosis. Nothing is stopping you, go find out for yourself.
